transient illusion

From the train, the river at
Dobbs Ferry, NY looked to be
only a thin, static layer of
material reflecting the light
and sky. In close proximity,
the water appeared to transform
into a significant flowing mass.
The powerful, shifting illusion
of forms captivated me.
I began to feel the existence
of the indefinite and uncertain.

Research studies of materials
and scribed reliefs allowed the
project to materialize itself
in its physical phase of exploration.
Because of the abstract perceptive
concept of a transient illusion,
materials that are expressive and
embody physical characteristics of
weight, rigidity, malleability and
firmness were chosen.

Spatial conditions and volumetric
intricacies unfold and act as
keystone components for the further
development of the project.

The architecture is familiar
and mysterious; it is tangible
in its built form but embodies
intangible intentions and questions
that can only be experienced when
the structure interconnects with
people.

Intention is put into
liminal transitions,
sublime statements,
and subliminal impacts.
Conscious awareness for
each step, each footfall.
You follow a one directional
path from above the land,
across the land, down a
slope that descends below
the water level, until
the path rises above the
water level once again.

The changes in elevation
feel imperceptible until
the path rises above the
water and you experience
a unique state of being
immersed with the
water volume.
